Meet the designer Marina Palovaara.
My name is Marina Palovaara and I am 29 years old. I am the designer and creator behind La petite nina.
I am from Luleå, a small town in the north of Sweden. I moved to Stockholm at an early age to stydy contemporary dance at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. After my years in Stockholm, I continue my dance studies at P.A.R.T.S. in Bruxelles. Later I went to France to work on my own dance project and then to Luleå to teach and perform. I returned to Bruxelles 2 years later to continued my studies at P.A.R.T.S and since then I have been living and working here. I have had some day jobs besides dancing before I discovered clothing design.
As a clothing designer I am self taught. When I first started out, my technical skills where limited, but they evolved fast as I spent a lot of time making clothing for my own use. I started La petite nina in 2011 and since then I have been working mostly with clothing. I still do dance projects sometimes but not with the same intentions as before.
I grew up in a small family as an only child. I had a lot of support from my parents and they always encouraged me to do what I love to do. The women in my family have always been doing a lot of handcrafts and I suppose many of my skills have come from my grandmothers. Knitting and sewing has been a passion in their lives and it’s really nice to carry on this tradition.
At the moment, I am living with my boyfriend and his two children in a lovely apartment in Saint-Gilles. I have my sewing studio at home, which I find very practical. It allows me to work when ever I feel creative and it suits me perfectly. For me, creativity is one of the most important parts of life. I love the fact that I can get inspired and be creative in what I do.
